Our Heavy Hunter line emulates long-distance tactical rifles. Big receivers, heavy barrel contours, and high-performance magnum calibers are all traits of the “overwatch” precision rifles common to the war on terror. As you reach the extreme of anything, the usable application narrows — these are not rifles most would haul over mountains and through valleys.
We discourage featherweight barrels here, because these cartridges bring a barrel to temperature very quickly; aggressive shot cadences can lead to off-call shots from overheating. Heavy barrels also make a rifle more forgiving — both in recoil and in ammunition sensitivity.
Rigs like this have gained enormous popularity, and stock makers have answered the demand. The Manners T5-A and McMillan A-5 are both excellent candidates, offering a more vertical grip, broad forend, and adjustable cheek height. Long-distance shooting demands premium, high-magnification optics with large objective lenses, which tend to sit higher over the receiver.
