Light and Medium Hunter rifles follow the classic lines and styles demanded by the American sportsman. They typically fall into a weight range of 6.5 to 11.0 lbs and use #3 to #5 sporter-contour barrels. Chambers are offered in a broad range of cartridges to suit any application, and where applicable a blind-magazine option further reduces overall weight.
A featherweight rifle chambered in a fast, flat-shooting caliber becomes an excellent candidate for alpine use when fitted with powerful optics. This is when the overall package must be considered — as the following story from the field illustrates.
LRI delivered a lightweight 7mm-08 Ackley Improved hunting rig to Ivory Horn Outfitters in the Crazy Mountains of Montana. Fitted with a fluted #3-contour barrel in an ADL configuration, it proved very accurate and worthy — tagging out several animals in the first week of elk season, highlighted by a 697-yard one-shot kill on a Rocky Mountain billy goat.
Then came a phone call. The early-morning drive in a warm pickup was the catalyst: falling snow melted on the rifle, then refroze once its temperature normalized, and the bolt began to stick. The fix was simple — added clearance and more aggressive bolt fluting — and the lesson was reinforced that thinking ahead is never a bad idea. Guided hunts are a luxury, and it matters to us that a client gets the most from the experience.
